St Mary Magdalene Chapel
Trafalgar

The outstation community of the four comprising Laudat, Wotten Waven, Morne Prosper and Trafalgar, which altogether along with the Cathedral make up the Roseau Parish. The chapel building is situated in the center of the village. At 62 ft x 34 ft the building comfortably holds about 200 persons. About 150 of the faithful regularly attend the Sunday Mass at 9:00 a.m and a service/Mass is normally held every Tuesday at 6:00 a.m. Rev. Fr. Nigel Karam, our Parish Priest normally presides over Sunday Mass. he is sometimes assisted by Rev. Msgr. Eustace Thomas, Rev. Fr. Calistus St. Louis and Deacon Rev. Mr. Jeffers Paul. Not to be forgotten as well are our Lay Associates in Pastoral Care, Mr. Anthony Le Blanc, Mr. Edward Lambert and others who conduct services regularly in the absence of a Priest.

The chapel was constructed in 1980. Over the years the building has been maintained by a combination of contract work as well as voluntary assistance from the church community. The youth of the community are increasingly playing a greater role as regards the upkeep of the chapel. For example, for the Chapel Feast, the Feast of St. Mary Magdalene held on Sunday 19th July, the Youth were instrumental in cleaning the inside and outside of the Chapel as well as decorating the altar with flowers. Prior to this the youth by their own initiative painted the outside of the chapel and one Saturday came together to repair some of the old windows – which had probably been installed when the building had first been built.

The Trafalgar choir is growing from strength to strength and is arguably one of the best in the entire diocese. The choir is such a resounding success partly owing to the commitment and dedication of its Mistresses: Jesse Le Blanc and Joanne Bellot. The lovely voices can be heard at weddings, church feasts and choir festivals such as the St. Cecilia’s Choir Festival.

THE WAY FORWARD

There continues to be much work to be done. However, the Trafalgar Chapel community has grown immensely over the years and continues to grow. Undoubtedly one of the reasons is the cooperation that exists between the older members of the community and the youth. Additionally, ongoing evangelism cannot be discounted. Certainly, there have been challenges and there will continue to be but as long as we recognize that everything we do must be done with love then we will continue to see our church grow and flourish.
